Waterloo Gorget

Postby RoyalWelsh » June 8th, 2011, 1:31 pm

Just for interest, this is a British Officer's Gorget (type 1796-1830), found on the field of Waterloo by Henry Weymouth (British traveller on the continent) on 21 June 1815, three days after the battle on June 18.
Original buff liner 100% intact. "Battle of Waterloo" printed label is brittle, but 95% intact. A real Waterloo relic.

Wellington remarked on the 23rd Foot shortly before Waterloo.... "I never saw any regiment in such order; it was the most complete and handsome military body I ever looked at".

Beautiful gorget! Is it known what officer or regiment it belonged to?

Hi Ian, yes I'm lucky to be its caretaker in this era.......if I can get it off the wall and get the box apart, I'll get some more pics...

Hi Mark, I believe it was just battle detritus and the traveller who found it was probably one of the scavengers of the battlefield...no ID possible I'm afraid. This was part of a private collection which included a French battle flag from the same battle.....massive flag!
